Canvas Guidelines and Procedures

The Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides students, faculty and staff access to the Canvas System. With Canvas, faculty can post online course content; discussion forums and chat sessions; provide online access to grades and assessments; and perform many other teaching/learning activities.

These guidelines and procedures regulate the use of the Temple University Canvas System by Canvas users, instructors, students, staff and leaders.


Overall Compliance
Canvas users must comply with all other ITS policies on computer usage, networking, security, and other applicable policies related to the use of Temple University computer resources.

Course Material Responsibility
While the Temple University Canvas system is managed by Instructure and the Information Technology Services department, Canvas course owners are responsible for their course content, for ensuring that content adheres to current copyright laws and for ensuring all content is ADA compliant in accordance with University policy.   

New Courses
A new course has to be created every semester. To simplify this process, ITS will create new course shells each semester. Once the new course shell is created, course owners will be able to copy content from a previous semester course if they choose. 

Course Enrollment 
Enrollment - An automatic enrollment process will enroll Temple students with an AccessNet account registered for a course through Banner. Canvas instructors who wish to enroll students automatically can use the "Enroll Now" tool in Course Tools.

When students drop a course, they are removed from Temple's official class list and marked inactive in the Canvas course list.

Roles and Permissions

In Canvas there are two types of users, account-level users (Canvas administration) and course-level users. Within the course-level users, Temple University have six different roles including: 

  • Teacher
  • Student
  • Teaching Assistant (TA)
  • Designer
  • Observer
  • Grader
