Alas, Spring Break is over and filling out those applications for summer jobs/internships are now on your mind. Writing a cover letter can be the worst part about the application, especially when copying and pasting it from Word messes up the formatting of it in the online application.
Next time, use a quick keyboard shortcut to copy and paste the text from Word and convert it into plain text. Note: The plain text version will remove standard formatting, like bold, underline and hyperlinks, but will retain bullets.
- Chrome/Firefox: Paste the copied text by pressing Ctrl+Shift+V (PC) or Cmd+Shift+V (Mac).
- Safari (Mac): Paste the copied text by pressing Cmd+Option+Shift+V (Alternatively, click the Edit menu and select Paste and Match Style.)
Emailing your cover letter? This keyboard shortcut also works great when copying text from Word and pasting it as plain text into the body of your message.
