Message from the VP for Information Technology

Greetings,

Welcome to Temple University Information Technology Services (ITS). As Vice President for Information Technology, I am honored to lead a team of dedicated professionals committed to supporting Temple’s mission through innovation, reliability and service excellence.

Technology continues to drive transformation across every aspect of the university, enhancing teaching, learning, research and operations. ITS provides shared infrastructure, systems and support for all schools, colleges, administrative units, and campuses. These efforts serve more than 180,000 members of the Temple community and our health system partners, including Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple Physicians, Temple Faculty Physicians and Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Over the past year, ITS continued to perform as a high-achieving organization. We met all organizational service level agreements (SLAs) without any major or critical outages affecting university or health system operations. Our Technology Support Center handled more than 207,000 service contacts across 25 partner organizations, achieving a 93% first-contact resolution rate—well above the higher education benchmark of 75–88% reported by EDUCAUSE and HDI.

We also strengthened the university’s cybersecurity posture through the launch of a new, cloud-based Security Operations Center (SOC) providing 24/7 monitoring. These efforts reinforce our shared responsibility to protect the institution’s digital assets and uphold data integrity.

Our progress this year reflects a unified focus on strategic planning, operational excellence and innovation:

  • Technology Roadmaps: We completed and published enterprise roadmaps that define long-term direction across ITS service areas, ensuring every investment aligns with Temple’s strategic goals and priorities.

  • Project Prioritization: We partnered with Gartner, a leading IT research and advisory firm, to implement a project scoring model based on business value and readiness in order to strengthen governance and enhance transparency in decision-making.

  • Central Learning Spaces: We successfully centralized support and funding for 327 learning spaces across the Main Campus, upgrading more than 100 classrooms with the latest instructional technologies, and receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from faculty and students.

  • Public Safety and Security: We expanded our partnership with Campus Safety, advancing the implementation of ZeroEyes AI gun detection technology and upgrading the university’s security camera network.

  • Faculty and Community Support: We advanced TUprofile, a comprehensive information management system that will serve as a centralized platform to highlight faculty and staff achievements, streamline academic reporting, and support recruitment, promotion, and tenure.

  • Artificial Intelligence: We are developing an AI-powered chatbot search engine that will improve access to campus services and information. Pilot projects are underway with Environmental Health & Radiation Safety, Health and Wellness, Career Services, Student Affairs and Admissions. ITS also established ethical and privacy guidelines for the use of generative AI, ensuring responsible deployment and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead to 2025–2026, our focus will remain on strategic alignment, collaboration and continuous improvement. Key priorities include:

  • Expanding the use of the Project Management Office for project intake to ensure investments deliver meaningful value.

  • Advancing AI and automation to improve efficiency, user experience, and decision support.

  • Continuing IT unification efforts across the university to streamline operations, promote cross-training and enhance career pathways for IT professionals.

  • Strengthening data governance and expanding our unified data platform to support analytics, reporting and compliance across the university.

  • Investing in workforce development and community partnerships that extend Temple’s mission beyond campus.

I am especially proud of our continued progress towards accessibility and compliance goals. This year, ITS collaborated with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs to develop a university-wide strategy to meet new federal Department of Justice ADA standards by 2026. We also partnered with Institutional Advancement to plan the integration of multiple systems into a single, cohesive platform that will support both Temple University and Temple Health.

At Temple ITS, we believe technology is not just a tool—it’s a strategic enabler of excellence. Our mission is to provide secure, innovative, and reliable technology solutions that empower the success of our students, faculty, researchers, and clinicians.

Thank you for visiting our website and for being part of the Temple community. Our team remains dedicated to delivering the best technology and service experiences possible as we continue to build the foundation for Temple’s digital future.

Sincerely,
Larry Brandolph
